From A Mersey Shore

From here the Mersey looks smooth
as mother of pearl
snaking along the Liverpool shore
tides immortal, topaz bright
waters bracing in the wake of ships
like jubilant crowds

above, the lazy-drift of gulls
ride on never ending blue
skies stretched cloud-high
wide as horizons

Down there the steady traffic flow
trails away on rippling streets
warmed on freshly salted air
brackish, brawny
heading inland on a Mersey breeze

down there beneath the
watchful cormorant gaze
meant for seafarers
landlubbers the same
ever mindful of turbulent centuries
of trade and labour and hardship alike

standing proud as the city
and its people
never conceding
never resting
or losing faith

not once.
