My Athens by the Sea

I dreamed beyond the sunset where the blue meets deeper blue,
When twilight sets upon the heart and rests its crown on you;
To shimmer through the eventide, your splendour sets me free,
My heart, my home, my Liverpool, my Athens by the Sea.

The roads of Liverpool are long, the pilgrims' feet attest,
When shadows of the past will pale to light that sets to West;
The cross-roads of the pilgrim's world will never let me be,
A stranger but a passing friend, my Athens by the Sea.

Your rain will fall more softly and your winds will warmer blow,
The comforts of your hearts will keep and warm me where I go;
Where ere I dream of past and hope, whatever lands I see,
My heart will be the crown I set on Athens by the Sea.
