The Dockers Umberella

For sixty three years
on Liverpool’s giant Meccano
brown liveried carriages
rattled from Seaforth to Dingle
giving Dockers shelter from rain.

Smelling of
fresh varnished seating
wet wool and smoke
wood and iron
the Old Overhead
offered
third class tickets
for a panoramic view of the city
and a life line for Dockers
scurrying to catch the tide.

but the Harbour Board and Council
decided to dismantle
the worlds first ever
electric elevated railway
and once again
Liverpool confined its vision to history.
